500 years ago, Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest was almost as large as
the Amazon Rainforest. Now, due to land clearing, only 5% of its original
land surface remains. That which remains harbors a considerable number
of endangered plant and animal species, and is designated a World
Biosphere Reserve.
More
information
In 2005, the Osvaldo Timoteo Ecological Reserve was established in
the state of Alagoas, to preserve and protect one of the last remaining
non-clearcut regions of the Atlantic Rainforest in Northeastern Brazil.
The Reserve has been established as a permanent non-for-profit trust
- To protect current plant and animal life
- To re-establish indigenous species that have been locally eliminated
- To provide a location for ecologically and culturally sustainable
tourism
- To promote environmental education within the states of Alagoas
and Pernambuco

A new school was recently established at the reserve. This school
has the following purposes:
1. To educate students from the region about the rainforest, and how
it can be preserved in a fashion that still affords positive economic
development

2. To train environmental educators and eco-tour guides

3. To provide school and after-school opportunites for children who
live near the reserve (including breakfast and lunch for those students,
as an incentive to attend)

The school has obtained funding from patrons within Brazil for the
building, electricity, phone lines, and buses to bring in students.

However, the school needs computers, in order to give students opportunities
to access the internet, and use word processing and presentation software.
Computers and computer equiptment are extremely expensive in Brazil,
compared to the United States. Computers that are obsolete here will
be perfect for the school's students.
Our goal is to provide computers and associated equiptment (modems,
keyboards, a network router) to this school.
This will require both obtaining appropriate equiptment in the United
States, transporting the equiptment safely and securely to Brazil,
and setting it up in a protected and useful fashion within Brazil.
